As we pass the midpoint of the year, it is a good moment to take stock. The loan markets have once again shown their adaptability, adjusting to shifting rates, geopolitical uncertainty and changing sources of capital while continuing to provide the financing that businesses rely on.
A market of many lenders
The most striking feature of the market today is the breadth of its participants. Banks remain at its heart, but private credit funds, institutional investors and other non-bank lenders now play a significant role across leveraged finance, real estate, infrastructure and fund finance. Increasingly, these lenders are not competitors so much as partners, working side by side in the same transactions.
That evolution is reflected in our own membership, and it shapes our work. Our documentation must serve every type of lender and borrower, and our policy engagement must explain to regulators how this interconnected market actually works.
Fund finance comes of age
Fund finance has been one of the fastest-developing areas of the market. This year we held our first event dedicated to it, and the energy in the room reflected how far the market has come. We will continue to build out our documentation and training in this area.
Increasingly, banks and private credit lenders are not competitors so much as partners, working side by side in the same transactions.
Sustainable lending: from growth to integrity
Sustainable lending is maturing. The questions we hear from members have shifted from how to structure a green or sustainability-linked loan to how to make sure it is credible. Working with our colleagues at the APLMA and LSTA, we continue to refine the principles and guidance that underpin this market, and to support transition finance as companies move along the path to net zero.
Digitalisation and efficiency
Operational efficiency remains a priority for our members. Faster settlement, better data and more consistent processes benefit everyone in the market. We are continuing our work on standardised data and digital documentation, and on initiatives to make secondary trading more efficient.
Our priorities for the rest of the year
- Continuing to develop our documentation across investment grade, leveraged, real estate, fund finance and private credit.
- Engaging with policymakers in the UK, EU and beyond on the regulation of banks and non-bank lenders.
- Expanding our learning and development programme, including new courses for those joining the market.
- Bringing the market together through our conferences, webinars and working groups.
None of this would be possible without the time and expertise our members give to our working groups and committees. Thank you. I look forward to seeing many of you at our events in the months ahead.
